A New Life

More than 20 years ago, in 1999, Claire H. from Belgium was the first patient to use the Impella, the world's smallest heart pump.

Claire was an athletic, active woman in the prime of life when one day, completely unexpectedly, she felt severe pain in her chest. Her GP immediately referred her to a cardiologist for further treatment. Claire, who needed coronary bypass surgery, was ultimately able to undergo successful Impella-supported surgery and treatment by Prof. Dr Bart Meyns at University Hospital Leuven, Belgium. The use of the Impella meant that Claire's heart could rest, recover and regain its former strength. After nine days in hospital, Claire could be discharged. Since the surgery more than 20 years ago, Claire has had no more heart problems and she can once again live her life to the fullest with her two children and two grandchildren.
