Jean-Pierre Gianni's Journey to Heart Recovery
Jean-Pierre Gianni, 69, is a retired electrician from Sacramento, CA. In August 2021, he began experiencing cold sweats and lightheadedness at home. Jean-Pierre’s sister, Dominque, called 911 and first responders transported him to Mercy San Juan Medical Center in Sacramento, CA. He was quickly brought to the catheterization lab in cardiogenic shock with right ventricular failure and recurrent arrhythmias that required defibrillation. Dr. Sundeep Adusumalli implanted Impella RP® to support Jean-Pierre’s right ventricle and allow it to rest. The hemodynamic support allowed Dr. Adusumalli to place stents into Jean-Pierre’s coronary artery to restore blood flow to his heart muscle. After three days of support, Jean-Pierre’s heart function recovered and Impella® was weaned and removed.
After two weeks in the hospital, Jean-Pierre returned home with his own heart and subsequently completed cardiac rehab. Today, he walks around the block every day and enjoys dinners with his large family.
